The 2007 driving season
officially got underway on Saturday, May12th with a
drive to the Classic Car Center in Fredericksburg.
The overcast skies and warm weather made for a great
drive through the back roads of three counties. With
only 3 miles to go to our destination, our trip
became a bit more challenging when we found
ourselves sitting in traffic at the notorious
intersection of Rt 1 and Rt 17. It was graduation at
Mary Washington University so traffic was even worse
then usual and the flow through the traffic light
was down to a trickle.
Slowly we crept forward and slowly our temperature
gauges crept hotter. Anyone who has ever owned an
MGA knows the feeling. Chatting away, enjoying the
drive but always with an eye on the gauge. How far
to push it? How hot is too hot? Finally, experience
prevailed and we pulled over. After a flurry of cell
calls, we regrouped to cool down and find a detour
to get us across the river. No problem. With the
help of a trusty GPS system, we easily navigated
through a maze of residential streets and arrived
without any more problems.
Our arrival at the Classic Car Center was met by
co-owner and General Manager Garland Gentry who gave
us a tour of the facility. They offer a full range
of restoration and repairs services in the 5,000
square foot shop (wish my house was so tidy), heated
and air conditioned storage space for 100 cars, as
well as consignment car sales. Vintage Bentley,
Model A, an original AC Cobra ... whatever your
taste, there was a car for everyone and we had fun
getting first dibs on our favorites. Taking time out
from our fantasies for lunch, we had pizza in the
meeting room that is decked out like a 1950s malt
shop, complete with red and white booths, swivel
counter stools, and jukebox.
